Yule Simmer Pot: Celebrating the Winter Solstice

Yule Simmer Pot: Celebrating the Winter Solstice

Yule is an ancient tradition that celebrates the The Winter Solstice, and takes place on December 21st - the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the day that symbolizes the death and rebirth cycle through the sun, as the longest night of the year gives way to the return of the sun. The days now continue to grow longer and longer until we reach the Summer Solstice in June.

In ancient Roman tradition, the winter solstice was celebrated as the festival Saturnalia. Saturnalia was celebrated to honor Saturn, the god of agriculture. Ancient Romans decorated their homes with wreaths and other winter greenery, and they spent their days feasting, drinking, lighting candles, giving gifts and participating in jolly festivities. Celtic Paganism adopted many of these traditions. Yule is celebrated over twelve days, beginning on the Winter Solstice on December 21st and ending January 1st. Yule traditions include lighting a Yule Log, decorating trees with dried fruit and candles, and setting intentions for the new year.
